Key concepts exercise

Level one

  • Click and mortar company : that means a company who exists on web and reality. Many examples possibles : Fnac, Promod
  • Pure dotcom company : you can also say "brick and mortar company " that means a virtual company on web. Example Easyjet
  • Monetize an internet model. You can give money with your personnal site. For example on a blog, you can have publicity also the company transfers you money to agree to put some : Adsense on Blogger
Level two

  • Intellectual property. That means that intellectual property (rules who protect the authors or creators) continues to exist on the web. You can copy or download text or music if the site don't give the authorization . And if you take a text or an citation, you must quote the person's name. The site Yahoo music respects the royalties, it made link with SACEM (company of authors, type-setters and editors of music)."I think it's important to respect the job of authors ; now authors, who want distributate freely theirs works, must be able to do it as they want. But I also think that CD or DVD are too expensive so I understand why persons copy or download music or films. And especially I find lamentable that also little money on totality is allocated to the artists."
  • DRM, or digital rights management. The management of the numerical rights consists in allowing the restriction of the diffusion by copy of digital components. The royalties are thus protected . The goal of DRM is to be able to parameterize and control, by a technical measurement of protection, contents. You can choose the detail of the diffusion, teh number of copies or the period of validity. Also with pay-on-demand TV, you can avoid illegal downloadings. The service isn't expensive and pratical. For example, on Canalplay (the offer's Free), you can look about a film for 1,99 euros.

Level three

  • TIVO (or TiVo) is a numerical video recorder on hard disk, which makes it possible to record the programs televised on hard disk. It allows the same functions as a video tape recorder or recording DVD. You can make pause, re-examine scenes, go ahead or retrogress.
  • Time shifting means the same thing that TIVO.
  • Pay-on-demand- TV. If you want to look a film on TV, you must pay some money to have it during a precise time (often 24 hours). Example the offers' Free : Canalplay
  • Streaming media. It's the possibility for TV or radio to propose theirs emissions in the same time that they produce them.
  • Podcasting. The podcasting (term of English origin) is a usually free means of diffusion of sound or video files on Internet. People or TV or radio can put theirs podcasting on web. After you can hear, see and download them on your computer or your I-Pod. For example, the podcasts of radio Nova.
Level Four

  • EULA, or and user licensing agreement. It is a contract between a person who installs a software on her computer and the owner of the software (who have the licence owner). Called licences of software owners, they limit the number of machines on which one can install the software or the number of users which can use the software.
Level Five

  • A long tail marketing strategy means a strategy who based on the theory of the greatest number. It describes certain business or economic models like Amazon. For example, to sell on web returns less expensive that in a store, also you can put much more products on line to be sold, and you are likely more to increase your sales (considering the number of Net surfers). Moreover when people make a research on a subject or a product, they have more chances to find your product because more possibilities or links of sites appear of the pages of research. The book Da Vinci Code really does not neeed of long trail marketing because it it gains an enormous success : everybody talks about this book and it was sold everywhere in the world.
